A recent study published in the Journal of Inflammation demonstrated that stem cells have the potential to cure neuro-inflammation, a dangerous condition that can impair cognition and cause blindness.

For the first time, the study, which demonstrated the use of stem cells in managing neuro-inflammation and neurotoxicity, was directed by Fyyaz Siddiqui, a scientist born in Hyderabad and currently based in Canada.

He and his team have previously shown that stem cells from the human umbilical cords first trimester can reduce CNS inflammation and aberrant behavior in an in vivo model of depression and anxiety. They also put out a biological mechanism that contends that the systemic injection of stem cells may indirectly influence the signaling pathways in the brain through control of the peripherally activated immune system.

This breakthrough discovery offers a safe and non-invasive therapeutic approach for treating inflammation-driven neurotoxic chemical imbalances associated with neurological diseases and emotional disorders, which impact over a billion people globally.

These results suggest that stem cells may be employed to regulate glutamate transport mechanisms in neuro-inflammation.
